We don’t celebrate Halloween as much in the UK as in the US. But having lived in Canada for a while, I did used to take my kids out trick-or-treating when they were young. I moved to the Isle of Man in 1981, where we still celebrate Hop-tu-naa, an ages old Celtic tradition of singing songs ‘around the houses’, and expecting to be given sweets. If not you can expect a trick. It’s basically the same as trick-or-treating, and some believed that the tradition was taken ‘across the water’ to become Halloween. Hop-tu-naa usually involves throwing raw eggs if the householder doesn’t hand over the sweets. The one year we were away for this holiday our garage had a dozen raw eggs thrown at and stuck to it for us to clean up when we arrived home!
