When Inspiration Strikes…

With: Heidi Vanlandingham

Giveaway Alert!

This is my first feature on Just Paranormal Romance, and I’m thrilled to be here. I just released In Mage We Trust, my first paranormal-with-elements-of-romantic-suspense romance, and how it came about is kind of a funny story!

Many readers know me for my sweet western historical fiction and my WWII romance. Crossing over to write paranormal romance may seem like a stretch, but when the muse calls, a writer listens.

In this case, the muse came in the form of a writing prompt. A photo, actually. I don’t usually use writing prompts to get my creative juices flowing, but something about this image called to me, so I grabbed my notebook and wrote a paragraph…which I promptly stuck it in a drawer.

Six months later, I found the paragraph I’d jotted down. After laughing at what I’d written, I added a few more paragraphs and sent it to my critique partner. She emailed me back in capital letters, “WRITE MORE.” We did this routine a few times until I had a complete book.

That was 2009. Fast-forward 10 years, and that inspired paragraph is now a three-book series called Of Mystics and Mayhem.

In Mage We Trust is about a sassy heroine who’s struggled in life to get to where she’s at without help from her very dysfunctional family. Johnna has always known about her father’s magic, but when she’s attacked by flying jelly bellies with wings (which she later finds out are imps) and a zombie who jumpstarts her own magical ability, her entire world turns inside out and upside down.

Johnna is spirited into a realm of worlds filled with demons, wizards, mythological gods and goddesses, and other creatures more dangerous than she could ever imagine. Through it all, she discovers a strength she never knew she had, faith in the family she’d thought abandoned her, and her own true love.

Just so you know, I still laugh at the funny parts in the story. I hope you will, too!
