Recipe created by Rebecca E. Neely
TORTURED KEEPER
A 6 feet tall-ish, close to human as you can get male Keeper
A smattering of Vitality stone
Jaded attitude
Kick ass leadership skills
Perseverance
Guilt
A dash of hope
NO SUBSTITUTES: Ice blue eyes, hands roughened from labor, scruff of a beard and torn Levi jeans
Optional: one acoustic guitar
ANXIOUS HUMAN
5’8”, stick straight brown hair, no more than 27 years old, female human
Loyal to family
Untapped wells of strength
Keen sense of smell
Timid, but willing to stand up for what she believes in
Carefully combine Keeper and Human with equal parts understanding, tenderness and fierceness. Let simmer for thirteen years. Memories may be impacted or erased. If bitterness and/or explosion occurs, immediately temper with forgiveness and acceptance. Either Keeper or Human may become empowered.
WARNING: indulging could lead to unspeakable passion, falling head over heels in love, and revelation of secrets.
Best served hot and immediately, preferably with chilled bottled water. May substitute day old coffee and Danish, or pancakes, microwaved. Savor, as empowerment and entrancement is likely to occur.
EXCERPT from THE KEEPER

He spoke slowly, deliberately. “I’m a carpenter by trade. And I’m what’s called a Keeper, by birth.” His mouth settled into a hard line. “I’m the leader of our clan. We’re guardians of humans. We have enemies. Betrayers. They prey on human weaknesses. Feed off the energy from our Vitality.”
He touched a finger to the stone around his neck. “Our most precious resource. They might already be after us.”
Carpenter? Keeper? Betrayers? Libby struggled to wrap her mind around what she was hearing. Humans. She opened her mouth, shut it. Tried again. “Are you . . . you’re not human?”
“As close to human as you can get.” One corner of his mouth curved. “I know this sounds crazy. I know it’s a lot for you to process, much less accept. I showed you the memory of your father because I knew it was something you would believe.”
She swatted at sudden tears. “Yes.”
“I need for you to believe this, too.”
“I’m scared,” she gulped.
“I’m sorry for that.” Slowly, he reached for her and rubbed her tears away with his thumb.
Touched by the gesture, Libby could only stare.
His eyes burned into hers, as hot and blue as a flame, almost like he could see into her soul. “As long as you’re with me, I will never let anything happen to you.”
It was more than a promise. It was a vow.
