With: Kate Hill
In the past, female vampires were often portrayed as victims. Dracula’s brides were under his control. Usually they appeared as feral creatures who attacked at his command and cowered when faced with his anger. Similarly, the female vampires in Dark Shadows (1991) and Count Yorga, Vampire were also victims and controlled by the male vampire who created them.
A female vampire has all the powers of her male counterpart, so there is no reason for her to be subservient. Female vampires evolved from submissive–at least toward males of their kind–to dominant. Vampires like Drusilla (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Janette (Forever Knight) might have started out as victims, but they used their paranormal powers to their advantage. Janette even used hers to at times protect victimized women.
Other female vampires are in control from the first. Miriam (The Hunger), Katrina (Vamp) and Santanico Pandemonium (From Dusk Till Dawn) dominate just about everyone around them. Eve (Only Lovers Left Alive) is a stronger character than her melancholy vampire husband Adam.
With their powers, female vampires can be both villainous and heroic. Many paranormal romances feature vampire heroines.
What do you think about female vampires and their girl power? Who are some of your favorite female vampires, either from books or movies?
