The paranormal has always fascinated me

With: A.L. Kessler

The paranormal has always fascinated me, from telling ghost stories to trying to capture ghosts on tape in my grandmother’s basement. Researching cases of vampirism, to the ancient gods of Egyptian mythology. On a trip in high school I stalked grave yards for ghosts and imagined what it’d be like for vampires to roam the streets amongst the humans. Would a werewolf go to eat at a normal restaurant? How did we know that these creatures didn’t just live next door without us knowing? My grandmother told me my imagination was too wild for my own good and that I needed to stop filling my head with non-sense and focus on school. (which was probably true as I was a horrible student.) My mother said something similar to me in grade school, clearly I survived school with my wild day dreams. I found myself drawing characters who could summon dragons and other creatures from different realms. I had an entire imaginary world growing up, with paranormal creatures everyone was afraid of or didn’t want to think about. Urban legends like Bloody Mary fascinated me (and yet, scared the living day lights out of me. I didn’t sleep in a room with a mirror for weeks after that one.) These were the things I surrounded myself with growing up.

I didn’t really start reading paranormal books until high school when a friend introduced me to Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. That’s where I fell in love with the genre for fiction. I loved the idea of taking something that, in my family, was considered taboo and non-sense and applying it to the real world. At that time, the genre Urban Fantasy had yet to be labeled, it was just paranormal, or fantasy. When I started putting pen to paper to create novels out of my day dreams, I realized that I had found the right place for me. This was what I was going to be, a paranormal author. The term Urban Fantasy was born, and I knew that’s where I was going to be, that’s where I was going to find my home. I remember walking out of the computer room and telling my grandmother “I’m going to be an author.” My grandmother looked over her paper and raised a brow. “Don’t quit your day job.” Was what she responded. Of course, I wasn’t going to quit my day job, I didn’t have one to quit. It was her way of saying that’s a hard journey, even if the words stung a little bit. Twelve-ish years later, here I stand…I get to introduce myself with “I’m A.L. Kessler and I’m a paranormal romance and urban fantasy author.” And yet, in a way, my world hasn’t changed. I still surround myself with thoughts of the paranormal and what-ifs.
