Have you ever had something happen in your life that was both so momentous and so unlikely that you suspected it must have been a result of fate, or guided by destiny? Many people describe feeling this way around times of transition, such as births and deaths. Others point to moments when the trajectory of their lives changed forever—when they met their true love, or discovered a passion for a new interest or purpose. Life’s magic moments, shrouded in mystery.

When you or those around you have intuitive gifts, magic moments and mysterious occurrences can seem like a normal part of life. For example, you might know immediately that a relative has been hurt, even though they’re miles away. Or you might sense when someone close to you is about to pass on, even though they’re presumed healthy. Perhaps loved ones who have died have found ways to communicate their ongoing presence in your life.

When I ask people if they have any paranormal gifts or have ever experienced something “magical” or mysterious, the answer is almost always “yes.” Sometimes we attempt to explain such events; sometimes we simply acknowledge them as awe-inspiring moments, and weave them into the fabric of our lives.

This is the reality in which ALL THE BROKEN PLACES is grounded. I am an avid reader of stories that play fast and loose with the rules of the known universe, creating everything from new species to alternate dimensions. But from the moment I began to write this book, I knew that I wanted to present the “paranormal” as “normal”—as it is to so many. While a few elements were amplified or invented for the story, it felt important to me to be as realistic as possible in portraying the characters’ gifts, and in showing how they use their skills out in the world.

Why I felt so strongly about this, I can’t say for sure; some aspects of the creative process are still a black box to me. Perhaps presenting the paranormal as a matter of fact was a way of balancing the skepticism with which such abilities and experiences are so often greeted—skepticism that is initially shared by Cate, the heroine of the series.

I’m a huge fan of Albert Einstein’s, and this quote of his is one of my favorites: “There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle.”While we may question whether the paranormal is a part of our reality, it is my hope that all of us can recognize when momentous things are happening in our lives and remain open to life’s mysteries, suspending skepticism and disbelief long enough to cherish our own magic moments.

Here’s a little teaser for ALL THE BROKEN PLACES, the first book in The Healing Edge series:ATBP_coverMED

All of Cate’s problems are in her head. That may be her greatest strength.

Cate Duncan is a promising young therapist, dedicated to her work. But after her mother’s suicide, she is seized by a paralyzing depression. To save her job, Cate agrees to enter a program with Dr. Angeline MacGregor, run by her stern son, Ben, and housed in a repurposed church. Cate doesn’t quite understand what the program entails, but she soon learns that the skills she will develop there may not only help her learn how to cope with her own problems, but will also lead her to a much greater purpose.

The MacGregor Group is a collection of alternative healers whose unconventional approaches include crystals, aura reading and psychics. They know that their life’s work invites skepticism, and welcome the chance to prove naysayers wrong. But they need the unique abilities that Cate can bring, and as she slides ever closer to her own abyss, they will do everything in their power to protect Cate from those who wish her harm—including herself.

A powerful novel of suspense and a wildly inventive start to this paranormal romance series, ALL THE BROKEN PLACES engages readers with its striking blend of the supernatural and the psychological.
