Opening Day!

Congratulations to Angela, the winner of the $25 Amazon gift card. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Welcome lovers of Paranormal Romance! It’s opening day here at JPR and we’re so happy to have you here.

What is Paranormal Romance?  Well, Wikipedia will tell you this:

Paranormal romance is a sub-genre of the romance novel.

Okay, I’m cool with that.

A type of speculative fiction, paranormal romance focuses on romance and includes elements beyond the range of scientific explanation, blending together themes from the genres of traditional fantasy, science fiction, or horror.

So it’s romance with weird (stuff) going on?

Common hallmarks are romantic relationships between humans and vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, and other entities of a fantastic or otherworldly nature.

Okay, Scooby Doo, but with more passion?

Beyond the more prevalent themes involving vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, or time travel, paranormal romances can also include books featuring characters with psychic abilities, like telekinesis or telepathy. Paranormal romance has its roots in Gothic fiction.

Ding. Ding. Ding. Gothic fiction!  I love it so!  Women in willowy white gowns, perched on a cliff. As they look out over a moonlit ocean, a shadow approaches. A tall, dark, and handsome shadow. Is he a man? Is he a vampire? A werewolf? A demon? Does it matter? He’s hot.

Its most recent revival has been spurred by turn of the 21st century technology, e.g. the internet and electronic publishing. Paranormal romances are one of the fastest growing trends in the romance genre.

And why is that? Because with Paranormal and Fantasy, there are no bounds to the author’s imagination. There are no bounds to the reader’s imagination. We can boldly go where no one has gone before!

There are many great Paranormal Romance sites…so why another?

Allow me to step back from the genre for a moment to give you a little history about the JUST sites.  Once upon a time (two years ago) I wandered to my Google Search box and typed, โ€œRomantic Suspense Authorsโ€.  At the time, what came back were listings for Romantic Suspense authors by publishing house, Romantic Suspense authors by RWA Chapter, Romantic Suspense authors by zodiac sign, Romantic Suspense authors by political partyโ€ฆLOL, well, you get the idea. There was no single answer, no single source…and it frustrated me. And on that day (well, maybe the next day), JUST ROMANTIC SUSPENSE was born. Its goal was to celebrate the genre with no lines drawn.

Here at JPR we seek to bring the Paranormal Romance world together in that same fashion. And I can’t even begin to tell you how awesome it is to celebrate the genre with you. We have a wonderful lineup of talented and beautiful authors who are ready to share their stories.

I have a quick paranormal romance tale to share from an RWA experience. At the conference, I boarded an elevator where a man was standing in the back corner, clearly fresh from the gym. At the next stop, an author carrying a large trophy got on.  I asked her what she won the award for, and she said, “Erotic Paranormal Romance.” She elaborated with, “Think of Lady And The Tramp meets a werewolf.”

When the author exited the elevator, the man in back spoke up.  He said, “Excuse me. Did that woman just say she won an award for an erotic book about Lady And The Tramp and werewolves?”

I replied, “Yes. Yes she did.”

The guy shook his head and said, “Man, I need to read more.”

We will be giving away a $25.00 Amazon Gift Card to one lucky winner who leaves a comment or submits an email entry.

Please stop by and introduce yourself or share your favorite element of Paranormal Romance.

  2. Congrats on another site, Maureen! I do like to read Paranormal Romance so it is great that there is another blog to learn about new authors. I think Twilight was my first introduction into the Paranormal genre. I think my two fave paranormal authors are Cynthia Eden (love her Fallen Angels) and Katie Rues (love her Shifters). It doesn’t hurt that they also write Romantic Suspense. Good luck with this site as well. I have no doubts it will be as awesome as your others.
